Borne by Saint Bréanainn (Brendan) of Clonfert, the 6th-century 'Navigator' whose voyage in search of the Isle of the Blessed is told in 'Navigatio Sancti Brendani'.

This earlier form preserves the saint's name as it appeared in his lifetime, used in Irish-language references to the saint and to the mountain in Kerry where he reputedly prayed before his Atlantic voyage.
