Overview
The Irish form of Brigid, borne by both the pre-Christian Celtic goddess of poetry, smithcraft and healing, and Saint Bríd of Kildare, one of the three patron saints of Ireland.
The story behind Bríd
Saint Brigid founded her great monastery at Kildare (Cill Dara, 'church of the oak') in the 5th-6th century; the older goddess Brigid, daughter of the Dagda, was patroness of the same crafts and was said to have inspired the perpetual flame the nuns of Kildare tended for centuries.
