Borne by Saint Cárthach (Mochuda) of Lismore, a 7th-century abbot, and by the Mac Cárthaigh kings of Desmond, ancestors of the McCarthy family.
The story behind Cárthach
Saint Cárthach was forcibly expelled from his monastery at Rahan in 636 by a coalition of jealous abbots; he travelled south to found Lismore in Waterford, which became one of medieval Ireland's foremost centres of learning.
