From Latin 'columba' (dove); borne by Saint Colm Cille (Columba), founder of Iona and one of the three patron saints of Ireland.
The story behind Colm
Saint Colm Cille was born of the royal Cenél Conaill in Donegal in 521; after a copy-book quarrel led to the bloody Battle of Cúl Dreimhne, he exiled himself to Iona, founding the monastery from which Christian Ireland would re-evangelise much of Britain.
