Borne by Saint Deaglán of Ardmore, a 5th-century Irish bishop and possibly a contemporary of Patrick, patron saint of the Déisi of Munster.
The story behind Deaglán
Saint Deaglán founded his monastery at Ardmore in Waterford, and his round tower and oratory still stand; in the 12th-century Life of Deaglán he is said to have predated Patrick and to have attended the Synod of Cashel after Patrick's arrival.
