Overview
Borne by Derbforgaill, daughter of King Domnall of Ulster who, transformed into a swan, was wounded by Cú Chulainn and later took her own life when mocked; also by the historical Derbforgaill, abducted wife of Tigernán Ua Ruairc, whose abduction triggered the Norman invasion of Ireland.
The story behind Derbforgaill
In 1152, Derbforgaill was abducted (or eloped) with Diarmait Mac Murrough; her recovery by her husband Tigernán was a humiliation Diarmait avenged years later by inviting the Anglo-Normans to Ireland — beginning the conquest.
