The Old Irish form of Diarmuid; borne by Diarmait mac Cerbaill, 6th-century High King who quarrelled with Saint Colm Cille over the Cathach (battle-book), and by Diarmait Mac Murchadha, the 12th-century King of Leinster whose alliance with the Normans changed Irish history.
The story behind Diarmait
Diarmait mac Cerbaill ruled at Tara in the 540s and was the king who lost the famous copy-book judgement against Colm Cille; legend says he was the last to celebrate the great pagan feast of Tara before his death foretold by a triple-death prophecy.
